How investing works in Kenya
Shares in Kenya trade on the Nairobi Securities Exchange. To buy them you need a broker that is able to trade on that exchange, and you pay in KES.
The regulator is the Capital Markets Authority (CMA). It licenses brokers and publishes the rules for listed companies, so checking that a broker is registered with it is the first step.
Before you invest, read the rules for foreign investors in Kenya: some markets limit who may buy, and some restrict how money leaves the country. Our guide on foreign investor rules covers what to check.
Prices are quoted in KES. If you live in another currency, a move in the exchange rate can change your return even when the share price does not move. See currency risk for foreign stocks.
